Blog Banters

Shamelessly borrowed from Kirith Kodachi's Blog Banter Page which was shamelessly borrowed from Seismic Stan's Blog Banter page:-

A History of Blog Banters

Originally the brainchild of the Blogfather, Crazy Kinux, blog banters are single topics discussed across the EVE blogging community. It encourages the sharing of ideas and cross-pollination of readership. All in all a healthy thing for a community.

Crazy Kinux nurtured the Blog Banters at Crazy Kinux's Musing from inception in October 2008 to March 2011.

Following Crazy Kinux's departure from the EVE Blogosphere, stewardship of the Blog Banter concept found a home here at Freebooted from Aug 2011 until May 2013. With a tweak to the traditional format, the individual banters evolved to contribute to a final summary designed to give the reader a broad overview of every blogger's perspective.

In June 2013, Seismic Stan stepped down for various reasons and passed the EVE Blog Banter community initiative on to the capable stewardship of Kirith Kodachi at Inner Sanctum of the Ninveah.

In June 2015 Kirith Kodachi stepped down as custodian of the Banters handing the torch to me, Drackarn of Sand, Cider and Spaceships.

What is a Blog Banter?

A blog banter is an event where a topic is presented to all EVE bloggers and they can choose to write about if they want in any style they choose. Then, on the main Blog Banter page on this website where the topic is presented I will link all contributing posts that include the Blog Banter header text and link back to the page. This allows for a communication on a single topic and a sharing of readership and ideas through a cross section of the player-base.

How to Get Involved.

ANYBODY can get involved. Post your response and link it in the comments of the monthly blog banter topic. Its not invitation only, you don't have to be on the mailing list or have done one before. You don't need to reply to every banter (although I hope most will).

The topic of the monthly Banter is usually sent out a few days before it goes live so bloggers have chance to get the creative juices flowing. To be added to the mailing list contact Drackarn in-game or drackarn at gmail dot com and I'll add you to the list.

Here are the previous blog banters:-

May 2016 - BB75 - What Does Project Nova Need to Be Successful?

At Fanfest CCP showcased their current iteration of the FPS set in the Eve Universe. Following on from DUST514 and Project Legion, Project Nova is shaping up to be a solid FPS with CCP taking the decision to get the game mechanics right first. However with so many FPS out there what will Nova need in order to stand out from a very large crowd and be successful? What are the opportunities and perhaps more importantly, the dangers for CCP? How can Nova compete against CoD, Battlefront and Titanfall to name a few?

April 2016 - BB74 - The Most Important Reveal at Fanfest Was......

So when this Blog Banter goes live Fanfest will be over. Hungover geeks from around the world will be departing Reykjavik after a five-day binge of important internet spaceships and partying. Whether you were there in person, watched the streams or read the dev blogs on your mobile hidden under your work desk there was probably something in there that gave you a "nerd-boner". What for you personally was the most important thing to come out of Fanfest 2016?

March 2016 - BB73 - The Other Eve Game?

So soon(tm) we will have Eve Online, Valkyrie, Gunjack and the as yet untitled FPS to replace DUST514/Project Legion. Are we missing anything else? Are then any other games CCP should be looking into? Colony building simulators in the style of Sim City or Rimworld. Should it be on a grander scale link Civilisation or Stronghold Kingdoms. How about RTS games ala Command and Conquer. Survival games such as Rust? Planet based combat like World of Tanks? Would you like to see other game types expanding the Eve Universe or should CCP stick to what it knows?

February 2016 - BB72 - This is the Road (map) to.....

This month's suggestion comes from Jakob Anedalle.

"What do you think about using Sugar's recent blog post as a kickoff for a Blog Banter. I think it's a great open-ended topic:

http://www.lowseclifestyle.com/2016/02/your-ideal-roadmap.html"

You know what? That's all it needs. A great open ended topic!

January 2016 - BB71 - Too Many Ships Spoil the Sandpit?

We all like important internet spaceships right? The more spaceships the better right? Or are we getting too many to be easily to remember them all. A Mastodon on scan? That the hell is that and what does it do? Oh! Never mind!

Are we getting too many ships. Is it too complicated to remember them all and what their traits are? Do FC's these days need an encyclopedic knowledge of ship types unless they want their fleet to DIAF. With more and more ships being released each year will we ever reach "too many" or do you think there can never be too many important internet spaceship types?

December 2015 - BB70 Dear CCP, I want a Space-Pony and a Space-Puppy and a....

If CCP was Santa and you could ask for anything (in-game obviously) what would it be? A new type of ship that is tailored to your game-play? A change to mechanics? A battleship mini-doomsday weapon? Proper hats for your avatar? Opening of that bloody door? There are so many different options depending on what you do and what you want to get out of Eve Online. What would you like to see in your virtual Christmas stocking from CCP?

November 2015 - BB69 - Because of Space-Magic

CCP sometimes get stuck between a veldspar 'roid and a hard place when they try to blend realism with sensible game mechanics in our sci-fi simulator. Sometimes they create a scientific answer such as 4th dimensional drag to explain our 'submarines in space'. Other times, not so much. When a null-sec Citadel is destroyed players 'stuffz' is to be magicked to another station. Why should a citadel be different to a titan? Should CCP ensure that 'space magic' always has a plausible explanation or do we need just to say "Well, its only a game!" and engage the willing suspension of disbelief? How should it work when a citadel goes boom, how do we balance risk with reward, and how should any "space-magic" be explained?

What do you play Eve on? I'll show you mine if you show me yours! Are you pew-pewing on a laptop? Plotting universal domination on a 12 monitor set up? Mining away on a 50" TV? Is your set up located where your other half can speak to you or do you lock yourself away for hours in your Eve themed shed? How do you play your important internet spaceships?

September 2015 - BB67 - I am CCP X
There has been a catastrophic accident in the CCP Offices in the style of the Robbie Coltrane movie "The Pope Must Die". A leftover open bottle of Brennivin hidden behind a filing cabinet from the last Christmas party has mutated and released fumes affecting several senior CCP staff leading to some staffing changes. CCP Chair is now the CEO and CCP Cub is Executive Producer assisted by CCP Kitteh. In a freak accident your player account has just been upgraded to a senior CCP staffer leading a development team! With CCP now led by an inanimate object supported by a very young child and a fluffy cat, there is nothing to stop this from happening!
You are now CCP -Insert Your CCP Name Here- and have a team of developers eagerly awaiting your commands. So CCP X, what are you going to have your team work on?

August 2015 - BB66 - Caldarification
The art team has been working on many art assets recently and there has been talk of the "Caldarification" of Eve related art. Recently examples have been the WIP images of the Thrasher class destroyer redesign and the citadel. Do we need to keep the lines between the races designs clear cut or is some blending of more generic sci-fi styling a good thing? Should Matari be flying/floating scrap heaps? Should Gallente be 'all about the bass'? Or is a bit of generic sci-fi styling needed to bring new life to our important internet spaceships even if it leans a bit to Caldari?

July 2015 - BB65 - Attributes and Skills
Does Eve need attributes? It's been discussed a lot recently. Unlike other MMO's your characters attributes don't make a difference in day-to-day gameplay. They simply set how fast you train a skill. Is it time to remove attributes from the game or totally revamp their purpose? Do they add a level of complexity to the game that is not needed? If you really need to use a 3rd party application to get the most from it should it be in the game? Should they be repurposed with each attribute adding a modifier to your ship? Are attributes a relic from the past or are they an important part of Eve - You make your decision and deal with the consequences?

June 2015 - BB64 - Torpedo! Torpedo! Torpedo!
With the Aegis release we will see missile boats get their own version of the tracking enhancer and the tracking computer. On the forums there have been calls for new 'missile defence eWar' to counter these new modules. Is this needed? Are smartbomb 'firewalls' enough? Do defender missiles need an overhaul to make them actually worth using? Do we need the missile version of the remote tracking disruptor? Or do we go all Star Trek and have Point-Defence Phaser Banks? Banter on!

April 2015 - BB63 - Customization
Super Kerr Induced Nanocoating, new structures that can be fit like ships with modules, the promise of player built stargates... the ability to shape your space and change the look of your ships is finally coming to EVE. What other customization options of EVE would you like to have? What would you like to do to be able to shape space and environments? What would you like to change just for you in the client or in any 3rd party tools?

February 2015 - BB62: ReIncarnated
What is and/or should be the future for walking in stations?

December 2014 - BB61: Origin State
What would we encourage ALL new players to do in their first month to get them to subscribe long term, if we had to give out one set of advice for everyone (which we do if we're giving general advice)?

November 2014 - BB60: Measuring Success
With Phoebe about to land, CSM Minutes now out, and more of CCP Seagull's vision from Eve Vegas it appears CCP has a bold roadmap, is making big changes, and is willing to take a hit in the short term to see it through. What do you see as the measurable signs that will tell us that they've succeeded? What outcome will we see as players? Is it concurrent player count or something else?

October 2014 - BB59: Terrain
Probably been done before... What about local force projection (as opposed to the longer distance force projection that is often talked about)? I think of 'terrain' in EVE to be how systems are mapped together by gates. Strong tactics which exploit terrain have historically been extremely important in deciding battle outcomes. How does this apply in EVE in the presence of cynos?

August-September 2014 - BB58: Money
Where is the line to be drawn when a service attempts to monetize in order to offset costs and/or make a profit? Is asking for donations in Real Life cash too far (I realize CCP considers it unacceptable right now)? Selling non-EVE trademarked goods acceptable? Asking for money to pay for efforts in setting up EVE meetups? Should these all be scrutinized?

June 2014 - BB57: Understanding
What (if any) responsibility do veterans players have in finding these players and instructing them on the finer arts of ship fitting? If it exists, does it extend beyond them into teaching PvP skills, ISK making skills, market skills, social skills, life skills...

May 2014 - BB56: Upheaval
The common wisdom in EVE Online is that, beyond the odd high-value moon or Faction Warfare scam, there's little in low sec or NPC null sec to the attract ongoing attention of the big-dogs of null sec, with their large fleets and super cap doctrines. It's assumed that NPC space simply isn't worth the bother of controlling even if one could control it.
Is this about to change?

April 2014 - BB55: Famous or Infamous
Write about somebody who is "space famous" and why you hate/admire them, somebody who isn't space famous but you think should be or will be, or discuss space fame in general, what it means, and how people end up so famous.

March 2014 - BB54: Heroes
Do classic heroes exist in EVE? Is such heroism even possible in EVE? How would you go about being one without opening yourself wide open to scams? Is the nature of the game so dark that heroes can't exist? How do you deal with that irony? What effect does this have on us and the psyche of new players coming in from other MMOs? Is it something special that we don't have classic heroes, or should we? Are our non classic heroes more genuine?

February 2014 - BB53: The Overview
The Overview. Is it sufficient? If not how can it be improved? Is there some way to replace it? Does it give too much information, or not enough? Please be creative and specific as the overview currently is the heartbeat of the GUI.

January 2014 - BB52: The Other Side
For the past four and a half years, the graph has hovered around that 30,000 mark; it is, for all intents and purposes, a plateau. But everything must come to an end sooner or later and that is what this blog banter is about. What's on the other side of that plateau?

November / December 2013 - BB51: The Shakes
EVE Online can be a game of heart-pounding, palm-sweating, adrenaline-fueled ecstasy or agony. Sometimes over the years those reactions dim and what was once a panic inducing situation becomes commonplace routine. For some, the shakes never go away.

October 2013 - BB50: Changes
With the Rubicon expansion being announced and the SOMER Blink scandals (or non-scandals depending on your point of view) that have erupted on the community at the same time, it truly feels like an age of EVE has passed and a new one is dawning.

September 2013 - BB49: Rich
What is "rich" in EVE? Is it simply having more ISK than most everyone else, is it measured in raw numbers of some other ethereal quality? Can you actually be poor? Have you ever lost nearly everything and had to claw your way back? If you are rich, how do you know and how did you get rich?

August 2013 - BB48: Lore
How important is “fluff” in Eve online? Would eve online be the same if it were purely numbers and mechanics, or are the fictional elements important to the enjoyment of the game?

July 2013 - BB47: Knowledge
Is EVE too complex for one person to know everything? Is it, in fact, too complex for one person to know everything about one topic?
SUMMARY BY Snipereagle1

April 2013 - BB46: The Main Event
How can prime fiction live events work alongside the day-to-day player-driven narrative?
SUMMARY BY Flying Silent

March 2013 - BB45: Propaganda
The art of manipulation is a staple of the EVE metagame. The banter community chews over the concept.

February 2013 - BB44: Is There Anybody Out There?
The divisive topic of the local chat channel falls under the sights of the banteratti and is requested as a Blog Banter by community members.

January 2013 - BB43: Celebrating the Nation of EVE
Kicking off the new Eden New Year and the start of the awards season by applauding our peers and embarrassing our enemies.
